PROJECT SUMMARY

This course, team taught by Joe Elliott (Professor and Chair, Art) and Lora Taub-Pervizpour (Associate Professor and Chair, Media and Communication), will explore the tradition and practice of documentary photography as a way of seeing and interpreting diverse cultural landscapes of the Lehigh Valley.  Documentary photography will be used as a tool for social engagement in preparation for intensive field-based projects. Our explorations will be supported by new digital technologies and networked social learning, using geolocation technologies to map our documentary photographs, and WordPress as a hub for collaboration, creative reflection and communication.  This reflection will focus on the roles that objectivity, clarity, politics, memory, social identity, and local culture play in the making and dissemination of photographs. We will shoot with digital SLRs, adjust and create images with Photoshop, and output in the form of ink-jet prints, digital photo books, and web-based methods of dissemination.
